Braces Vs Invisalign: Which Is Better?

With Invisalign on offer at our dental practice in Midhurst, West Sussex, you might be tempted to jump in and book a consultation. After all, so many famous film stars and singers have undergone treatment, that it’s likely to top off your list as a teeth-straightening solution. But first, why not do a little research? Your smile is a big part of your appearance – and it’s not a decision you should take lightly. As professionals who prioritise honesty and transparency above all else, let’s weigh up fixed braces or Invisalign, which is better?

Which is better for discreet treatment?

This depends on the type of fixed brace you’re looking at. While we know Invisalign (from ‘invisible aligners’) is the most discreet choice by far, that doesn’t mean that fixed braces can’t be low-key. With technology evolving so much over the years, you can now invest in tooth-coloured wires and clear brackets. Or even try lingual braces, which attach to the back surfaces of the teeth. We have to admit, though, that Invisalign definitely wins this one.

Which is better for comfort?

Fixed braces have come a long way since the days of headgear. But many types still use wires that need shortening and brackets that need adjusting – even though there are self-ligating options on the market with brackets that simply slide along when you need to tighten your brace. Invisalign takes the win, though, because it only makes small adjustments to your teeth at a time. That’s because the treatment uses a series of plastic trays that gradually make the alignments your teeth need. It means less pressure for your smile – and more to smile about overall.

Which is better for value?

It’s impossible to say whether two such distinctly different treatments will create the exact same results for your smile. But with Invisalign, you can see what these predicted results will look like, thanks to the clever scanning technology that photographs your teeth and plots their movements over time. It’s one of the reasons people choose Invisalign over fixed braces, as their results feel more ‘guaranteed’ and tangible. But, it doesn’t necessarily mean Invisalign is a ‘better’ treatment. As for cost, this is often comparable – but do ask your dentist if you feel concerned.

Which is better for the long term?

Neither fixed braces nor Invisalign will create the long-lasting results you deserve without wearing retainers at the end of treatment. These essentially keep your smile in its new position. The amount you’ll need to wear your retainer should decrease over time, but again, check with your dentist.

Are braces or Invisalign better for treating bite problems?

Here’s where we think treatment is comparable once again. Like fixed braces, Invisalign can help with dental problems like over and underbite, crowding and gaps. But in the most severe cases, it’s up to the dentist what they will recommend to the patient.
